Me :)

          Hi!  My name is Hayley and I am new to blogger.  I am a 4th grade ESL teacher and currently working on my Master's Degree in ESL.  I did my undergrad at Rhode Island College in Elementary Education and Dance. I graduated in Spring of 2016.



I love to dance.  At one point, I almost moved to New York City to pursue my dancing dream but I chose not to.  Some days I regret not taking that risk, however, I really do love my job and I am happy where I am.  When I am not working or taking grad classes, I take trips to NYC to dance.  I dance at Broadway Dance Center in Manhattan.  Being in NYC, specifically in the middle of Times Square, I feel so alive.  There are tons of people, from all walks of life, who come to the same place, at the same time.  Although I often go to NYC alone, I never feel alone being surrounded by such diversity.
                                     



This summer I am taking three graduate courses, teaching summer school, going on a few trips, and celebrating my 25th birthday.  I just finished one grad course for the first summer session, it was very intense and challenging but I learned so much! Besides Digital Media, I will be taking one more course in the second session. It is a full online course, which I am nervous about, but I hope Digital Media will help me feel more confident about it!  This will be my second year teaching summer school at my current school that I work at.  Hopefully next summer I will decide to take my summer off, I need it!  I will be going on vacation with my family to Ohio and somewhere else (not sure where yet) and some personal trips as well!  I am excited but also not excited to celebrate my 25th birthday.  I love birthdays but I do not want to get older.  Those are a few things I plan to do this summer. 

Fun fact: I was Elsa for the Hasbro Children's Hospital Sickle Cell celebration even though I had never seen Frozen.

What do you make of the (divergent) positions of Boyd and Prensky (per our discussion in class and/or per the article above?)  Where do you stand on the “digital native” terminology? After reading both Boyd and Prensky's positions in addition to what we covered in class, I have to say that they both have good points. Before class today I would have sided with Prensky's position but after our class conversation and reading other blog posts, I agree more with Boyd. Boyd's position on children really stuck out to me.  Not only does she know that children are into digital media, specifically social media, but she also understands that they are just kids.  Although kids are usually able to use apps, smart phones, and search the web, they are not intelligent critical thinkers are their ages.  They still need guidance and support from adults.  This is because everything on the internet is not good and not true.  Some students can get mislead by information ...

Disney

All growing up, I was surrounded by Disney.   Not only did I watch all of the Disney movies possible, but I also went to Disney World (so many times), went to see Disney on Ice (a couple times), owned a ton of Disney toys and games, and had Disney princess costumes!  My sister and I always loved to play dress up together.  I became obsessed with The Little Mermaid, specifically because I have red hair.   When I was only a baby, I was Ariel for Halloween.   Since then, my grandmother always calls me “Ariel” and I love it!   I felt like I could relate to Ariel the most because we look similar.   Growing up I was teased and sometimes bullied about my red hair.   Since red hair is not so common, and nobody in my family has red hair, I often felt like the odd child.   During sad times in my life, I would reflect on the Disney princesses and how they all had to overcome something.   This made me hopeful that I too, would be ...
